We started as two brothers in medicine, who spent enough time in hospitals to understand exactly what caffeine means to people who genuinely need it to function. We weren't looking to start a business. We were looking for a better way to get through a long shift. One conversation about functional gum changed everything. We spent months researching why no serious caffeinated gum existed in South Africa, vetting suppliers, refining formulas, solving texture and aftertaste problems, and testing on anyone willing. UpGum is what that process produced — a product we are proud to put our names and our medical credibility behind.
Our mission
We're on a mission to give South Africans a smarter, cleaner, more convenient energy option. Not a replacement for the things you already love — a complement to them. Energy that fits in your pocket, works faster than a drink, contains no sugar, and delivers a precise, consistent caffeine dose every single time. We believe functional products should be developed with the same rigour as clinical ones. That's the standard we hold ourselves to, because that's the background we come from.
Our vision
We want to live in a world where reaching for energy doesn't mean reaching for a fridge. Where the person pulling a night shift, grinding through an exam, pushing through a training session, or driving through the early hours has something in their pocket that actually works — developed by people who understand the science behind it, not just the marketing. UpGum is South Africa's first serious caffeinated chewing gum. We intend to keep it the best.
